Subject: Good Will Hunting, Pitching Dumbbells, and Socrates
Hello All!
Welcome to this week’s Letter, where you can read about 3 things I’ve thought about in the last 7 days.
3 Things From Me
An Idea:
Strength training is for building strength.
Obviously.
In Practical Programming for Strength Training, it’s argued that sport-specific lifts are a complete waste of time.
Athletes lift weights to get stronger and the classic exercises were developed to make people stronger.
Critics argue that even though sports-specific lifts are not as good at building strength, they’ll transfer over to your sport better.
But that’s what your sports practice is for already.
Practicing a throwing motion with a dumbbell is a waste of time for a pitcher.
The pitcher is better served by getting stronger in the gym and getting better at pitching on the mound.
When I read this, I was struck by how applicable it is.
How often do people stray from using things for what they’re actually meant to be used for?
Or lose sight of their initial reasons for starting on their quest for more?
A Movie:
I watched Good Will Hunting this week.
Easily a top 10 movie for me.
A Quote:
“I do not think it is permitted that a better man be harmed by a worse; certainly he might kill me, or perhaps banish or disenfranchise me, which he and maybe others think to be great harm, but I do not think so.”
-Socrates
In this moment, Socrates has been unjustly accused of impiety to the gods and is about to get the death penalty.
An impressive line to drop on your soon-to-be killers.
Peace,
Jacob Lipke
